Americans Attend Cricket Match, Still Confused by Game

By Carol Pearson

Roger and Suzanne Smith became the first two Americans to sit through an entire Cricket game Sunday when they bought tickets to see Australia take on India.  The match took place in Sydney, where Smith is vacationing with his wife Suzanne.

“I’ve always wanted to see one of those games, and now I can say that I have,” said Roger.  “Unfortunately, seeing a game and understanding the game are two different things.”

“Prior to today, all I knew about cricket was that it involved a ball and something called a wicket or widget.  I can never remember the name.  Now I know that there is a helmet involved too.”

Suzanne added, “We are fairly certain that Australia won.  I have no idea if that’s true or not, because I spent most of the time trying to figure out what purpose a wicket served.  Also, I was expecting the game to be more like badminton, so you can imagine my surprise by the field layout.”

Despite the fact that both Roger and Suzanne were confused beyond belief, they did say they had a fairly good time.

“I don’t think this will ever take off in the United States,” said Roger.  “It’s kind-of a silly game with odd rules and funny equipment.  Still, if you have a few extra hours or days, I would recommend trying to sit through one game.  Just so you can say you have.”
